71 dead in Eastern European cold snap

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/ukraines-says-43-people-have-died-so-far-from-severe-cold-weather/2012/02/01/gIQA9R2AhQ_story.html

Today from the bus I saw a man sitting on the sidewalk against a building. He was shivering but continuing to share his small blanket with a lifeless nearly frozen dog. Holding back the tears, knowing that he couldn’t possibly survive through the night there, I watched him tucking the blanket in around the dog. As the bus began to pull away, two older men and a woman approached the man and helped him to his feet. One picked up the dog and the last thing I saw was the other man take off his coat and wrap it around the rosy cheeked, frozen man.

Hoping that he found somewhere warm to spend the night, and thankful for those people who were so kind.
